Whitley County Receives $120,000 from Appalachian Regional Commission

FRANKFORT, KY. (September 22, 2017) – The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) approved $120,000 in Central Appalachia Distressed County Infrastructure funding to Whitley County and the Knox County Utility Commission (KCUC) to extend Whitley County’s existing waterline.

"I am pleased the ARC approved funding to extend waterline to residents in Whitley County," said the Department for Local Government (DLG) Commissioner Sandra Dunahoo. "This project will not only supply treated water services to county residents but will connect existing line to KCUC service territory."

The project will install 8,400 linear feet of four inch PVC piping to extend water services to county residents who are currently using a well water system. Whitley County Judge-Executive and the KCUC board requested a connection to treated potable water and the extended line will tie into the Knox County water system without adversely affecting capacity.

"This much needed ARC grant ensures that safe, reliable drinking water is delivered to families in the community," said Senate President Robert Stivers. "This is critical to the ongoing infrastructure needs and development in Whitley County."

"Ensuring every resident in my district has access to running water has been a top priority of mine since taking office," said State Rep. Regina Huff. "I’m thankful that the ARC has approved funding to extend water line to residents in Whitley County. This will help to alleviate some of the ongoing concerns of the community and ensure that safe drinking water is provided to families that need it."

The ARC program and policy is to provide assistance for residential infrastructure project, water supply and wastewater treatment projects to assist in alleviating environmental public health concerns and ensure the acceptable quality of life for local residents.
