FRANKFORT, Ky. (January 16, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $567,042 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the City of Sturgis.

The federal funds will allow the city to address issues with its levee and flood protection system, as required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to achieve reaccreditation through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), following efforts to rehabilitate the levee from 2013 to 2015. The accreditation is required by FEMA when they prepare and print new floodplain maps. If accreditation is not received, flood maps will not show the existence of a levee system, which may result in Sturgis being labeled a “high risk” flood zone.

“This accreditation is important for residents of Sturgis because ultimately, residents of a ‘high risk’ flood zone are often required to purchase costly flood insurance on their homes and businesses,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “Perhaps more importantly, these levee improvements will provide flood protection for more than 950 homes, schools and businesses. I’m pleased that city officials have sought assistance through DLG to fund this project.”

In addition to the CDBG funding, the City of Sturgis has received an additional $266,542 from the Flood Control Program and $250,000 in Delta Regional Authority funding for the project. Union County Fiscal Court is also contributing $44,000.

“I’d like to thank Commissioner Dunahoo and her staff for making these funds available to the City of Sturgis,” Sen. Robby Mills said. “This is certainly a worthwhile investment.”

“Addressing the levee issue has been and will continue to be a top priority for City of Sturgis and all of Union County until its completion,” Rep. Suzanne Miles said. “I commend the past and present elected officials for working with DLG to fund this project.”
