FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the City of Brooksville.

The federal funds will allow the city to demolish two unsafe structures in the city’s downtown area and construct a new 2,400-square-foot community center. The new community center, which will be located at 115 and 117 Miami St., will serve as a multipurpose facility for large gatherings. It will also contain a kitchen that will be used to prepare meals for a summer lunch program that feeds approximately 75 youths.

In addition to the CDBG funding, the city will contribute $61,500 toward the project. Upon completion, the city will own, operate, maintain and insure the new building.

“I commend the city’s present and former elected officials for seeing an opportunity to take these two unsafe properties and create something that will foster a greater sense of community,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “This project also has the potential to attract new businesses to the area. I hope there are only more good things to come for the City of Brooksville and its residents.”

“This is great news for Brookville! I’m pleased that the Department for Local Government has supported this project with an investment of Community Development Block Grant funds,” Sen. Wil Schroder said. “I’d like to thank Commissioner Dunahoo and her staff for working alongside local officials to move this project forward.”

“This is a much-needed project since the City of Brooksville does not currently have a community center where residents can gather or hold business meetings,” Rep. John Sims said. “These funds are a much welcome investment in the community.”
