FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $714,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to Hickman County Fiscal Court.

The federal funds will allow the county to assist owners of dilapidated housing units in the communities of Oakton and Moscow in rehabilitating their blighted homes. The project will address eight homes, seven of which the county determined to be beyond repair and must be demolished and reconstructed on their existing properties. One dilapidated home will only require major rehabilitation. The county has found that the eight houses suffer from failing foundations, unsafe electrical wiring, insufficient insulation and water damage, among other structural concerns.

“When the work is finished, families living in these northwestern Hickman County communities will have homes that are safe, energy efficient and in accordance with Kentucky Housing Corporation design standards,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “I commend both previous and current Hickman County officials for providing this assistance to low-income residents and working to improve living conditions for this population.”

“This project is a great example of what is possible when various levels of government work together to address issues related to substandard and unsafe housing,” Sen. Stan Humphries said. “I look forward to seeing this project come together, and the CDBG funding is a key component of that.”

“This project will be life changing for vulnerable families in our rural communities,” Rep. Steven Rudy said. “I’m glad to see the needs of Hickman County prioritized in Frankfort with this significant level of funding, and want to thank the Department for Local Government for their support.”
