FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $722,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to McCreary County Fiscal Court.

The federal funds will allow the county to replace 30,785 linear feet of waterline along Marsh Creek Road near Strunk, Ky. Many of the county’s waterlines have been in service since the 1960s and are prone to frequent breaks, which cause a loss of water pressure or complete outages for the service area.

“Replacing these aging fixtures will provide more reliable service for households in the area, which is not just a matter of convenience and comfort but also safety,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “I commend local officials for reaching out to DLG for assistance with this project.”

In addition to the CDBG funding, the county has been issued a $722,710 loan from U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Rural Development toward the project.

“Local leaders across the country are looking for ways to be proactive about communities’ aging water systems,” Sen. Max Wise said. “I’m pleased to see McCreary County, DLG and USDA Rural Development working together to implement a solution that benefits residents.”

“This grant funding will allow McCreary County to improve outdated waterlines, making them more sustainable for our citizens,” Rep. Ken Upchurch said. “I’m glad to see DLG help us move this project forward and am glad to see the needs of our area looked out for in Frankfort.”
