FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 4, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $500,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to Juniper Health, Inc. The federal funds will allow the non-profit healthcare provider to equip and furnish a new 27,000-square-foot clinic in the City of Jackson.

“Juniper Health currently operates a clinic in Breathitt County that is much too small to meet the public’s needs,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “This new facility will allow Juniper Health to expand its services and offer dentistry, optometry, mental health services and more. I look forward to visiting the new clinic and seeing how it contributes to improved health outcomes for Breathitt County residents.”

In addition to the ARC funding, the state has contributed $125,000 to the project. The new facility cost approximately $7.2 million to build and was funded through a combination of federal, state and local sources.

“Expanding access to high-quality primary healthcare can have far-reaching consequences, from increasing life expectancy to improving economic conditions,” Sen. Brandon Smith said. “I’m pleased to see the people of Breathitt County supported with these funds.”

“The health implications of this new clinic certainly can’t be overlooked, but this new facility is also expected to create jobs in Breathitt County,” Rep. Cluster Howard said. “This is truly a worthwhile investment. I appreciate Commissioner Dunahoo and her hard work to help get this done."
