FRANKFORT, Ky. (October 9, 2018) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced $100,000 in Recreational Trails Program funding for the City of Paducah. The grant will help fund the construction of a pedestrian bridge that will cross Perkins Creek, connecting the Paducah Greenway Trail to McCracken County’s trail system.

The bridge, which will be approximately 110 feet long, will cross the creek just northwest of the Stuart Nelson baseball fields. The project includes landscaping and signage.

“The presence of a pedestrian bridge will make this part of McCracken County more walkable, which I hope will encourage families to be active together and spend more time outdoors,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “I’m pleased we could invest in a project that stands to further strengthen the area’s trails systems and foster an even greater sense of community.”

“Better access to our community’s outdoor amenities is always welcome news, “ Sen. Danny Carroll said. “McCracken County residents will surely benefit from this new addition to the trail system.”

“This bridge stands to have a huge impact on McCracken County, as it will allow users of the Greenway Trail to be able to more safely walk to the soccer fields, the mountain bike trail and other recreational areas,” Rep. Gerald Watkins said. “I look forward to seeing the impact this bridge will have on residents and visitors.”

The Recreational Trails Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The funds are administered by the Department for Local Government, an arm of the Office of the Governor dedicated to supporting local officials and communities, to selected grant applicants for the creation and development of recreational trails.
