Fleming County Fiscal Court Receives $500,000 CDBG Grant for Senior Center Rehabilitation

Grant Will Fund Renovations and Rehabilitation of Senior Citizen Center

FRANKFORT, Ky. (October 31, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) today announced a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) allocation for the Fleming County Fiscal Court for renovations to the Fleming County Senior Center.

“We are excited today to announce $500,000 in CDBG grant funding for Fleming County,” said Gov. Matt Bevin. “Our Department for Local Government works closely with local officials to address priority projects that will most positively impact their communities. This significant investment is based on those discussions and will enable vital community facility improvements to be made.”

Fleming County’s Senior Center, first built in the 1960s, is in desperate need of renovations so that it can continue to provide daily services to the senior population of Fleming County. The building requires major upgrades and repair due to its age.

The upgrades will ensure the building is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as improving the facility’s energy efficiency. The renovations will include window replacement, lighting replacement, floor and ceiling replacement, roof replacement, improvements to the HVAC, and other upgrades as budget allows.

The facility makes services available to 2,665 elderly residents in the area and is centrally located so that seniors can be linked with a variety of resources. The center currently provides daily meals, nutritional education, physical activities, and workshops for those that can attend, as well as providing additional services to those that unable to travel to the facility, including emergency assistance of utility payments at times of shut off, emergency food, weatherization program information, and a program for medical transportation needs.

“Serving our senior population is an important function of local government,” said DLG Commissioner Sandra Dunahoo. “The Fleming County Senior Center provides vital services to older adults in our community, and I’m very pleased that we were able to provide funding for this important project.”

"Our senior center has meant so much to our local senior citizens, so on their behalf, I am grateful that this funding has been approved for these needed upgrades, which will extend the center's usefulness for years to come," said state Rep. John Sims, Jr. "I'm proud to work with our local, state and federal officials to help make this and other helpful projects possible for our community and region."

"I am excited to see CDBG funds being awarded to help move the renovation project for the Fleming County Senior Citizens Center forward," said Congressman Barr. "It is incumbent upon us to do everything we can to keep our senior citizens active and involved in their communities, and this award makes great strides in that effort. I applaud Governor Bevin and DLG for their dedication to this project and others like it that help invigorate our communities."
