FRANKFORT, Ky. (December 14, 2018) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $91,750 grant from the Flood Control Program to Mason County Fiscal Court. The grant will fund cleanup efforts following the July 2017 flood event in Mason County.

In late July 2017, Mason County experienced unprecedented amounts of rainfall within a two-hour period. Rain totals ranged from four to eight inches throughout the county, with the force of water causing considerable damage. Though emergency debris removal took place following the flood event, recurring heavy rains have since caused severe bank erosion that in some cases is damaging roads.

“Cleanup following a major severe weather event can be extensive and often comes at a substantial and unexpected cost to the local government,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “I’m pleased to direct resources toward Mason County’s recovery efforts.”

The total project cost is expected to be $367,000. The National Resources Conservation Service will contribute $275,250 to Mason County’s cleanup efforts.

“Long- and short-term repairs from flash flooding damage have been costly for the county,” Sen. Stephen West said. “I’m thankful that Mason County officials were able to work with DLG and the National Resources Conservation Services to fund this project.”

“This is a much-needed and much-welcome investment in Mason County,” Rep. John Sims said. “I’d like to thank Commissioner Dunahoo and her staff for their role in this flood cleanup.”

About the Flood Control Program

The Flood Control Program uses state bond funds as grants to help meet cost-share match requirements associated with flood mitigation projects funded by the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the Federal Emergency Agency (FEMA), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and USDA Rural Development.

Examples of projects previously funded through the program include small dam reconstruction, acquisition of homes in flood-prone areas, debris removal and construction of floodwalls.
