FRANKFORT, Ky. (August 27, 2018) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced $1,254,320 in Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) funding for Perry County Fiscal Court. The grant will help fund the installation of water lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm drains and natural gas lines to support the development of a planned 30-acre commercial site east of Hazard, Ky., off of KY-80.

This project is a collaboration between Perry County Fiscal Court and the City of Hazard.

“The positive impact of this project will be felt immediately in Perry County and the surrounding areas, as the development of this commercial site will generate jobs and spur economic development in the region,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “I look forward to seeing the progress and eventual completion of this game-changing project.”

The commercial site is projected to create more than 200 permanent, full-time jobs. Additionally, the project is expected to create 90 temporary construction jobs.

“Eastern Kentucky residents have demonstrated extraordinary resilience as the economy has shifted in recent years. I’m pleased to see these federal dollars directed toward development of this new commercial site and the opportunities that will come with it,” Rep. Chris Fugate said. “I appreciate DLG’s assistance with the securing of these funds.”

The ARC Distressed Counties Program provides funds for designated counties to undertake projects that strengthen communities. Currently, 84 counties across eight states qualify for distressed county status based on per capita income and rates of poverty and unemployment. This includes 37 counties in Kentucky.

Funds are administered by DLG, an arm of the Office of the Governor dedicated to supporting local officials and communities. For more information, visit dlg.ky.gov.
