FRANKFORT, Ky. (September 27, 2018) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced $2,000,000 in Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Central Appalachia Distressed County Infrastructure funding for the City of Hindman.
The grant funding will allow the city to make significant repairs and improvements to a wastewater treatment plant and sewer line. The project involves rebuilding the existing wastewater treatment plant, repairing or replacing 15,200 linear feet of sewer line and repairing one pump station.
“The City of Hindman has struggled with wastewater compliance issues for years,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “This grant will allow the city to make long-term improvements instead of a short-term band-aid approach.”
The current condition of the treatment plant and sewer collection system has caused the city to experience complications with the plant’s operations and pollutants in discharge water.
“I’m glad I was able to help secure these funds directed toward Hindman and the city’s efforts to rehabilitate their current wastewater system,” Sen. Johnny Ray Turner said. “I look forward to seeing how these improvements affect water service, public health and environmental wellbeing in the area.”

The ARC Distressed Counties Program provides funds for designated counties to undertake projects that strengthen communities. Currently, 84 counties across eight states qualify for distressed county status based on per capita income and rates of poverty and unemployment. This includes 37 counties in Kentucky.
