FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2019) – The Department for Local Government (DLG) has announced a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to Estill County Fiscal Court.

The federal funds will allow the county, along with Estill County 21st Century, Inc., to renovate and restore the old Mack Theater located at 114 Main St. in downtown Irvine. The project will remove blighted portions of the theater, which has been closed for more than two decades, that pose a health and safety risk to the nearly 15,000 residents in Estill County.

The project consists of securing the east wall in the mezzanine, replacing the roof membrane, repairing bricks on the building’s front façade and adding a handicap-accessible meeting space and restroom on the first floor. The second floor will remain unoccupied and closed off to the public.

“The restoration of this historic theater will likely revitalize the arts scene in downtown Irvine, in addition to being a community gathering place and source of local pride,” DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo said. “The future venue will be a space where so much more than local performances can take place, and I’m pleased that DLG could assist with this project.”

In addition to the CDBG funding, local sources will contribute $88,000 toward the project. Upon completion, Estill County 21st Century, Inc. will continue to own, operate, maintain and insure the theater.

“The public safety component of this project is undeniable, as it will make the building safe once again for visitors,” Sen. Albert Robinson said. “I hope that renovating the Mack Theater will also help attract businesses and other new opportunities to Estill County. I’m thrilled to see DLG invest in this project.”

“This is an exciting investment in Estill County, as many residents have been hoping to see the old Mack Theater revitalized,” Rep. Cluster Howard said. “I’d like to thank Commissioner Dunahoo and her staff for their support and assistance.”
